Edinburgh’s landmark hotels are wonderful, but if you’re looking for something more understated and personal, you could do a lot worse than peruse our Top 5 list of the best boutique hotels in Edinburgh.
If you’re looking for a particularly exclusive Edinburgh hotel 21212 on Royal Terrace is guaranteed to tick the boxes because there are only four suites.
Each of the suites has its own private lounge area, views of the gardens to the rear and all the way across to the Firth of Forth on a clear day from the front.
Because the hotel boasts its own fine dining restaurant on the ground floor (read our review here), it’s a true foodies delight, where guests can luxuriate in the sumptuous dining room whilst watching their food being meticulously prepared to order.
Private events can also be catered for during your stay, with a dining room for up to ten guests in ATE or up to six in Pod, adjacent to the first floor drawing room.

The hotel’s Blackwood’s Bar and Grill serves a range of cuisine raised, caught or bred in Scotland, with beautifully tender steaks from cattle raised in the Scottish Highlands and rare-breed pork and lamb from the Scottish Borders. A range of steaks, cooked on a Josper grill, form the highlight of the relaxed brasserie, sitting alongside traditional brasserie fare such as burgers, roast chicken and fish.

5. The Witchery
The Witchery’s not only one of the best boutique hotels in Edinburgh, it’s also the best known. At the top of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, the hotel has nine sumptuous Gothic suites, decorated in dramatic reds, golds and warm woods, each with its own indulgent personality.
Because of its romantic atmosphere, The Witchery is very much a couple’s retreat. Most noteworthy, each suite has its own roll top bath for two and the option of a breakfast hamper in your room or a traditional breakfast in the Witchery Dining Room. Little wonder that Dannii Minogue called it ‘the ultimate lust den’!!
As well as accommodation, The Witchery has two award winning restaurants – The Witchery and The Secret Garden – both of which are as wonderfully extravagant in décor as the suites inside this quirky building.
