St Andrew’s Day

St. Andrew’s Day, marked on 30th November every year, is the commemorative day for St Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. It is a celebration of Scotland and Scottishness, often using the vivid blue ‘Saltire’, the national flag of Scotland.

Typically, attractions around Edinburgh participate in a ‘ticket giveaway’ that means entrance to Edinburgh Castle and many other historic sites is free of charge. Numbers of free tickets are limited and application is online.

In nearby East Lothian, the birthplace of the Scottish flag, there’s a special ‘Saltire Festival’ with a week of various events at the around St Andrew’s Day. Past programmes have been varied, with historical talks, a St Andrew’s Day Church service, rock and folk concerts, and film screenings.
