Tattu, hidden on West Register Street, is one of Edinburgh’s prettiest restaurants with an atmosphere as vibrant as the décor and a level of friendly service making guests feel welcome, without being intrusive.
My guest and I were invited to sample the Laurent-Perrier Champagne Flight menu and once seated in a cosy booth were treated to wave one – a glass of sparkling champagne shortly followed by a sesame and ginger chopped salad, chicken truffle shumai and crispy squid.
The salad was fresh with mint and citrus, but unfortunately I’m not a great fan of sesame oil so, although the upper layers of the salad were cleansing, I found it’s richness a little overpowering for my taste by the time we’d reached the lower layers of the dish. The truffle and chicken shumai was rich with earthy flavours and the crispy squid with an accompanying spicy dip was a triumph.
Wave two of our meal, served with a glass of rose champagne, featured steamed seabass, chicken, spinach and rice. The seabass was cooked to perfection with a delicate balance of citrus and spicy flavours and my only criticism would be that the skin of the fish should have been removed. The chicken had a wonderful char-grilled flavour, the rice was light and fluffy and the spinach was a nice addition to round off the course.
Wave three of the meal was served with a glass of champagne mixed with Glenmorangie, with the rim of the glass dipped in a decadent layer of chocolate honey. Fortunately for me my guest finds whisky too much for her taste so I guzzled down both glasses. The chocolate cherry “tree”, topped with candyfloss and sitting on a bed of cherry sorbet, was styled to perfection and served with the dramatic addition of dry ice and the coconut, the passion fruit and mango dessert was the perfect hit of indulgent sweetness and subtle fruit sharpness.
We reluctantly headed out into the night to find an all too elusive taxi and reflect on a very pleasant evening with food to suit differing tastes and a memory of the warmth and drama served.
