Edinburgh Restaurants doing takeaway in lockdown

Cannonball restaruant edinburgh restaurant edinburghs best restaurants edinburgh restaurant guide edinburghSatisfy your foodie cravings with our guide to Edinburgh Restaurants doing takeaway in lockdown.

At the time of writing, Edinburgh (and much of the world) is locked down due to Coronavirus/Covid-19. However, if you are lucky enough to live here, there are several great Edinburgh restaurants doing takeaway or home delivery, joining cafes and artisan bakeries, so that those isolating at home can enjoy their delicious wares.

A foodie drought averted by Edinburgh’s restaurant community

Edinburgh’s gourmands have always been abundantly served by superb restaurants, many of them featured and rated on this website. With lockdown currently implemented and all eat-in restaurants closed to the public, an already trying lockdown could have been even less pleasant for Edinburgh’s foodies, but a number of resourceful restaurants, cafes and bakeries (including some of our favourites) have stepped up and begun to provide takeaway and delivery services. There are many Edinburgh restaurants doing takeaway in lockdown that were not doing so before, but we’ve been typically #fiercelyfussy and selected our favourites for you.

1. Contini Restaurants (Cannonball, Contini George Street)

Services now offered: Prepared meal delivery, Produce delivery

Victor and Carina Contini own and operate a number of restaurants in the city, including The Scottish Cafe, Contini George Street, and Cannonball on The Royal Mile. We loved our visit to Cannonball, so we were delighted to see that the Contini’s stable were one of the first groups of Edinburgh restaurants doing takeaway in lockdown. Food typically uses local and Scottish produce with Italian cooking techniques. They have now even started offering delivery of fresh vegetables. Exactly the drop of culinary sunshine needed to get us through this trying period!

2. Merienda (Stockbridge)

Services now offered: Prepared meal delivery.

Merienda in Stockbridge is one of our favourite Edinburgh restaurant discoveries; we’re big fans of their food, and their accommodating service. They were one of the first to join the select group of Edinburgh restaurants doing takeaway in lockdown (helped by the fact that they already had a thriving outside catering business). The Merienda ‘social distancing menu’ consists of a selection of ‘restaurant classics’ for the fridge & freezer. The dishes come ready to re-heat with full instructions.

3. Fhior (Broughton Street)

Services now offered: Takeaway menu (collection only), produce supply (collection only)

A relative newcomer on the Edinburgh restaurant scene, having opened in 2018, Fhior has fast cemented its reputation as one of Edinburgh’s best modern restaurants. Like the decor the food is unfussy but impeccably prepared, allowing the Scottish ingredients, many from small artisan suppliers, to shine. Speaking of those suppliers, Fhior’s new ‘Root to Market’ initiative allows you to purchase the same seasonal produce that would usually be finding their way to your table, so you can try your own hand at being chef.

4. Borough (Leith)

Service now offered: Prepared meal delivery

A small, independently-owned Scottish bistro in Leith, Borough has picked up a legion of adoring fans in recent years. For the price of £60, their set menu for two offers starters, mains, two sides, something sweet, and is delivered complete with wine. That has to be worth £60 of anyone’s money.

5. Bread Meats Bread

Services now offered: Delivery through Ubereats, click and collect takeaway through website.

And now for something completely different… There has never been a shortage of fast food takeaway options in Edinburgh, but the entry of Bread Meats Bread into this arena takes things to a whole new level. With branches in Edinburgh in Glasgow, they have cornered the market in guilty burger-related pleasures with their gourmet burgers and Canadian poutine, now available at home through Uber Eats.

6. Le Di Vin

Services now offered: Food and wine delivery

We really miss Le Di Vin. We’re big fans of this Edinburgh wine bar, as you’ll see here. Short of being there with a good friend for a chat over some delicious wine and a sharing platter, the next best thing has got to be having the latter two items (sadly not the first) delivered to your door. It’s not just charcuterie and booze on offer either – there’s Croque Monsieur you can grill yourself, or the latest menu addition, Bouef Bourgignon. Sign us up!

7. The Little Bakery

Services now offered: Home delivery of a selection of baked goods

The Little Bakery in South Queensferry has a huge instagram following due to the frequent images of baked deliciousness posted on its page. Thankfully, during lockdown, rather than hanging up their aprons, the team has set about offering its wares for home delivery. Many of us have taken up baking during the lockdown, but if you feel like letting the professionals handle it for a change, you can order perfect cupcakes, cinnamon swirls, or even a full afternoon tea, from The Little Bakery’s website.
