A recent visit to Multrees Walk saw me tempted into Mulberry to have a nosy at their new handbag, the Leighton.
Everybody knows that Mulberry is synonymous with style, but it’s not necessarily obvious how practical and hardwearing their leather goods are, and this is down clever design, quality of materials and craftsmanship. The Leighton is no exception to the Mulberry rule, with each bag coming with a choice of three straps – standard, shoulder and chain – and being styled either open or closed.
Even though I confessed that I was only in to sneak a peek at the Leighton, and it’s my daughter who’s the designer handbag addict, the incredibly friendly staff were very happy to demonstrate the different ways the bag can be worn, as well as showing me other bags, and explaining how the various different shapes and shades are suited to different people and lifestyles.
Whilst chatting, it became evident that the staff are justifiably proud of the Mulberry brand, explaining that they established an apprenticeship programme in conjunction with a Somerset college, to train young students in leather goods manufacturing and that, with over 50% of their bags produced in their Somerset factories, they are the largest manufacturer of luxury leather goods in the United Kingdom.
I left the store with no additions to my Mulberry collection – still only owning my much-loved Bayswater – but with a resolve to put some money aside each month for my next investment.
