We’ve tried many Japanese restaurants in Edinburgh and been pretty disappointed, so imagine our delight the first time we visited The Kanpai Japanese Restaurant on Grindlay Street – in our opinion it’s Edinburgh’s Best Japanese Restaurant.
The decor of this small restaurant is fresh and minimalist, with the kitchen easily visible so anybody nosy enough (that’s generally me) can see how the food is prepared.
The menu offers some unusual fare in addition to the standard dishes you’d expect from a Japanese restaurant. We particularly loved the Teppan Sirloin steak and the grilled aubergine in a sweet miso sauce. The hand rolls were particularly impressive as well, with the seaweed still crispy and the avocado in all the dishes was perfectly ripe. The sushi and sashimi was deliciously fresh – we actually couldn’t find a fault.
The bill for three, including beers, green tea and spring water was just under £100.00 – about the same amount we’d normally pay for a visit to an average Japanese restaurant and that’s another reason why we think that this is Edinburgh’s best Japanese restaurant.
