Platinum Tour at The Scotch Whisky Experience

Edinburgh Whisky Tour EdinburghWe thought by now we’d done all the fun touristy things in Edinburgh, but it seems we were wrong in our assumption because this was a really interesting evening and most definitely fun.

Unlike a conventional Edinburgh whisky tour, the ‘tours’ offered by the Scotch Whisky Experience are guided experiences within one building, and as the last tour of the day, the Platinum tour lasts longer (1.5 hours) and offers a guided tasting of four different whiskies.

The tour begins with a barrel ride. I have to confess I was a little nervous, but rather than a roller coaster type experience it’s a gentle ride through a series of short films showing the whisky making process.

After the barrel ride we were met by our tour guide, who went into a little more detail about whisky making and then took us through into the sampling room where we were given a selection of whiskies to compare with each other.

I’m no great fan of whisky so some of the samples were a little harsh for my palate, but I’m reliably told that it’s an acquired taste and you just have to keep on drinking it, so I bravely ventured on. I would like to be able to say that I was able to tell the difference between whiskies from different regions, but that would be a lie. I did, however, find some of the whiskies smoother than others and could certainly taste the very distinct smokiness of the Laphroaig.

The next step of the tour was a visit to the vault, which impressively houses the largest Scotch whisky collection in the world – quite a sight!

The tour was both fun and educational and our tour guide was able to keep the whole thing light-hearted at the same time as answering complex questions from the more experienced whisky lovers.

Many of those taking the Platinum tour opt to continue their experience in the venue’s restaurant ‘Amber’, with their set ‘Taste of Scotland’ menu, which is exactly what we did. You can read about our experience at: Amber Restaurant
