We were delighted to be invited for afternoon tea at The Ivy on the Square and equally delighted to be greeted with a warm welcome and an ice cold glass of champagne! A quick glance at the menu gave us an overview of the many options available, all reasonably priced in comparison to similar establishments in the city.

Review Afternoon tea at the ivy edinburgh

On ordering our afternoon tea we were able to sit back, relax and take in our surroundings. The art deco theme, synonymous with The Ivy brand, did not disappoint. The atmosphere was friendly and happy chatter between friends filled the air whilst still allowing us to easily hold a conversation amongst ourselves. After a slight delay, which we had been kept updated about by the attentive staff, our afternoon tea arrived, displayed on a three-tier and a two-tier stand.

We started with the cucumber sandwiches and followed this up with the truffled chicken brioche and the smoked salmon on rye bread. The first was dainty and fresh and the last a little dry, however, it was the truffled chicken that stole the show!

The top tier provided us with a selection of deserts – delightful miniature flowerpots, delectable raspberry cheesecakes and, seeming somewhat out of place, small crème brûlée doughnuts. A quick dig in to the flowerpots revealed different chocolate mousses topped with a chocolate crumb. Reaching the bottom, a pool of salted caramel was tucked away – each layer was as delicious as the next. The light, creamy raspberry cheesecake, topped with a fresh raspberry, did not disappoint. The doughnuts, however, were the first item on the stand to let it down. After so many light and tasty offerings, they were heavy and greasy and, with the exception of the filling, they would not have been missed if they had not made it on to the stand.

The two-tier stand remained, and, with a fresh cappuccino and green tea delivered we had a warm scone each, with clotted cream, strawberry jam and fresh strawberries. A fantastic finale!

Overall, we felt afternoon tea at Thy Ivy on the Square was an enjoyable, reasonably priced treat! Excellent service throughout and, with only one or two little disappointments on our plates, we would definitely go back for either afternoon tea or to sample more of the menu.

We pride ourselves on being #fiercelyfussy at Edinburgh LBB, but would recommend afternoon tea at The Ivy on the Square!
