The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, housed in a stunning Georgian townhouse on Edinburgh’s Queen Street, is famous for its collection of rare and single malt whiskies, but lesser known is its collection of venue spaces.
Having recently been sympathetically restored, the building has retained its period charm whilst giving a nod to contemporary styling with the use of modern hues and furnishings.
A warm welcome to the building is provided by the golden glow of a glass-fronted cabinet holding a vast display of whisky before guests are invited to one of the many functions rooms.
As well as a relaxing bar, the ground floor has a wood paneled tasting room, in the centre of which is an oval table with bars stools around it. The table has a cut out area in the middle from which a wine or whisky expert guides guests through the various tinctures to be sampled. These fun tastings can be catered to individual needs and are a great way to break the ice.
The elegantly modernised first floor dining room, which overlooks Queen Street Gardens, split by double doors into to adjoining rooms, allows the flexibility for large parties or to have a drinks reception in one area before moving through to dine in the other.
The tromp l’oeil panels in the Library add a sophisticated air to this intimate dining space which can seat up to eight guests for a private dinner, making it ideal for intimate social gatherings or small business dinners.
The jewel in the crown of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society is, in our opinion, the Hunter Room. Situated at the top of the building the room has striking views across Edinburgh’s New town to the Firth of Forth and across to Fife. Painted in a warm amber hue the room and flooded with light during the day, the room is furnished with a large burr walnut dining table and is equally suited to use for fine dining or as a large boardroom.
The overall feel of this wonderfully light filled Georgian townhouse is one of warmth and friendliness, where the staff is enthusiastic to tailor tastings, dining and events to suit individual needs.
