As the saying goes, it’s nice to be nice. Sometimes that isn’t easy, but in this case it was a walk in the park and any trepidation I may have had faded when faced the quality of ingredients and the skills in executing the dishes – if it’s good enough for Leornado DiCaprio it’s good enough for me!
As a starter my dining partner and I chose Surprise Calamari. The calamari was succulent and the batter was crisp without out being greasy. I assume that the surprise was a bed of peppers and chilli, which doesn’t sound like too much of a surprise at all, but again I was wrong. The surprise here is that placing the calamari on the chilli means that spice wimps (I am a fully signed up member of the group) can easily pick round the chilli and experience a subtle heat, whilst those who prefer an explosion (my dining partner on this occasion) are equally happy.
As a main course I chose the Moules Frites and they were amongst the best I’ve ever had. The sauce was rich with flavours of the sea, but not so much that it overpowered the delicate flavour and soft tender meat of the shellfish. My dining partner, a huge burger fan, chose the Maison Bleue lamb burger with a focaccia bun and harissa mayonnaise, all of which were pronounced to be delicious.
For dessert I chose the creme brûlée, which could have done with about a minute less cooking time (I’m being very picky now) and my dining companion had the sticky toffee pudding, which was rich and gooey and the perfect end of a lovely meal.
For those who don’t know, the restaurant exists to help Edinburgh’s most disadvantaged, so you’ll leave with a happy tummy and a happy conscience!
