The cocktail tasting menu at luxury Edinburgh hotel, The Balmoral, makes for a fun and relaxing evening and proved to be ideal for my 19 year old daughter’s birthday.
The menu consists of a choice of two cocktails as a starter, followed by a passion fruit cocktail, a choice of three cocktails and then a choice of two cocktails, served with roasted nuts and (a new one on me, which I will be trying to replicate) sweet wasabi popcorn.
If you’d read any of my reviews before you’ll know I’m an avid food sharer and the same applies to drinks so it was slightly disappointing that we all chose the same drink for the first “course” – a Hendricks, cucumber, mint and apple cocktail, which was deliciously crisp and refreshing.
By the time we’d got to the second course we realised it might be a good idea not to continue on empty stomachs so we order some mixed platters from the bar. With crispy rustic toast, mixed cold meats, cheese, pates and crab one platter was easily enough for two people. Don’t ignore the carrots on the platter, they’re not just a garnish, they’re delicious.
The passion fruit cocktail was sweet and delicious and this was soon followed by the next course when, yipee, we all chose different cocktails. The blood orange and ginger was sharp and tangy, the watermelon subtle and the champagne and absolute gorgeously dry – hits all round!
We finished with a selection peached ice tea and key lime custard, both of which were amazingly well balanced.
And just when we thought we thought The Balmoral had outdone themselves and the cocktail tasting had left us all feeling rather giddy, they’d picked up that it was my daughter’s birthday and brought her this!
